Samsung launches new 98-inch 8K Neo QLED and more big-screens could be coming

If you’ve got the room for it, a massive TV can be a truly immersive experience. Screens have been creeping ever-larger over the last few years, pushing firmly into sizes that were once the exclusive purview of projectors. Now, Samsung is attempting to make large-screen experiences more affordable with its latest 2023 TV. It’s a behemoth that uses a 4K resolution to offer a stunning image, with a refresh rate capable of keeping up with your gaming demands and an intelligent processing system that delivers a more precise picture quality experience.

The Samsung 98-inch 8K Neo QLED, which will only be available in South Korea for the time being under the model number KQ98QNC990, offers a reversible design that can be installed either horizontally or vertically to suit your space and comes with a built-in soundbar that delivers a 360° sound experience. The TV is powered by Samsung’s Tizen smart TV platform, which brings all the usual apps and features you would expect from a high-end set. And for gamers, the TV offers a 144Hz refresh rate for smooth gameplay, with support for HDR10 and HLG content formats.

This is the second 98-inch TV to be launched by Samsung this year, following the launch of its QN900C Neo QLED in June. That set is still Samsung’s top pick for a premium TV, and it has all the standard premium features you would want from a set in this price range, from Quantum Dot technology to improve colors to Quantum HDR+ that provides greater brightness and contrast. It also has Samsung’s AI upscaling for higher resolution video playback, as well as an anti-glare coating to keep the display looking its best in bright rooms.

In terms of panel specifications, the 98-inch Samsung Neo QLED is based on a VA-based Mini LED panel with a peak brightness of 4000 nits. Samsung’s patented image quality control technology, Neo Quantum Matrix Pro, aims to deliver a more precise viewing experience, with its advanced scene-by-scene optimization and powerful 4K AI upscaling for superior detail in both dark and light scenes.

The TV will run on a 64-bit quad core processor that enables faster, more accurate processing of images and video. It’s also equipped with a wide color gamut and a wide viewing angle, making it suitable for use in multi-room setups. The 98-inch Samsung Neo QLED has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, for easy connectivity to compatible devices.

As with all of Samsung’s TVs, the 98-inch Neo QLED will be backed by the company’s customer service and warranty coverage. It will also be backed by the company’s One Connect box for HDMI and other connections to external gear. The TV will be available later this year in the US, UK and other markets.
